What is a Learnership?
A learnership is a structured work-based learning programme that combines theoretical training with practical workplace experience. It is designed to help participants develop job-ready skills while working towards a nationally recognised qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Learnerships are commonly offered by employers in partnership with accredited training providers and Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and usually run for a fixed period, often between 12 and 24 months.
Learnerships are aimed at improving employability, particularly for unemployed youth, matriculants, TVET students, and entry-level job seekers. Participants gain hands-on experience in a real working environment while receiving formal training and a monthly stipend. By completing a learnership, individuals are better prepared to enter the job market with both practical experience and a recognised qualification.
